Hi Steve,
I did reply to the email you sent me but for some reason it couldnt be
delivered so I will post the reply here as the content is applicable to
other users as well....
Hi Steve,
Glad you are pleased with the existing KAT5's.
I have read the detailed description below an have come to the following
conclusions....
1. You want to buy some modules that I havent marketed yet !
2. You are trying to over complicate things.
1. The KAT5 AVS is the only current production model but I have made a few
custom modules and can easily do the MCA or RGB/DVD.
2. There is no point converting to VGA before KAT5 and I dont have the VGA
versions available yet. John Sims RGB-VGA units split the composite sync
into separate H & V sync as output by a PC. Now if you are quick
off the
mark, you will realise that RGBHV=5 signals. To get that over the 4 pairs
of
a CAT5 cable involves COMBINING H & V into composite sync.....hang
on....didnt you just buy a unit to split them!
I can build you a set of KAT5 with SCARTS that will carry just the RGBS
signals (no audio) to the plasma screen. As regards the Sub-Woofer, if the
Sub is to be located near the plasma screen and the souce of the sub signal
is colocated with the S-Video source you only need a couple of modified
SCART leads.
You have stated that you do not use the Audio part of the KAT5's for your
plasma so if you make/buy a couple of SCART leads that have SCART to
S-Video
+ 2xPhono then you use the S-Video lead for the plasma and the Phono leads
for the Sub-Woofer audio.
Any further questions let me know.
I could sell you loads of units so you could build it as you describe but I
dont believe that is neccessary and I am not the kind of person to rip
people off. You may benefit from the JS converter at the Plasma end but I
would try normal RGBS into it first, you can always buy it later if
required.

Subject: Enquiry
Hi Keith,
Sorry for the length of the email but I wanted to be clear.
I bought a couple of S-Video modules off you last year (which are top stuff
& I'm very happy with) & I've got some new toys which I
need to connect up.
Specifically, I've bought a plasma screen (yum).
I want to run RGB down from the DVD player in my study to the plasma screen
in my lounge (I currently run S-video). The way I'm thinking is to buy a
RGB -> VGA converter from JS technology <a href="http://www.rgbtosvideo.com/">http://www.rgbtosvideo.com/</a>
& to buy
a set of KAT5 VGA (Computer Video (RGBS)) from you. The alternative is to
use a set of KAT5 RGB/DVD boxes to send component video down but I'm
figuring that the VGA route would make a better picture. Do you agree ?
If so, can you quote for a set of the VGA KAT5 boxes ? (or alternatively,
the RGB/DVD boxes).
The other toys I'm in the process of buying are a set of in wall speakers
&
an external subwoofer. Ideally I'll have the AV receiver in the study.
I've run 6 lengths of speaker cable into the lounge for the 5 in wall
speakers & a passive subwoofer. However, ideally I'd like to run an
active
subwoofer. This may be a stupid question but is it possible to run the line
level subwoofer out from the AV receiver over KAT5 into the lounge ?
The item that complicates this is that I'm running out of CAT5 cables (I
didn't put enough in - aaaargh). I've got 2 running from the study into the
lounge. The way I'm thinking at the moment is that
cable 1 = RGB signal into plasma screen
cable 2 = S-video into plasma screen (no audio) & the subwoofer
line level
signal
I have no speakers on the plasma screen so by my calculations that frees up
2 pairs of the CAT5 of cable 2 for other purposes (i.e. the subwoofer out).
My cunning plan (which may be total rubbish) is:
1) For cable 2 use the Craplins CAT5 doubler at either end.
2) Create customised patch leads for the AVS-TX/RX which only use pairs 2
&
4 (excluding the audio pairs as described in your design doc). Run the
S-video out from the TX into the doubler in the study for cable 2 &
out of
the doubler in the lounge into the RX (i.e. excluding the sound).
3) Create another set of patch leads for the subwoofer out which use one of
the non utilised pairs for cable 2 to run the subwoofer signal. Use one of
your audio modules (MCA) to transmit the signal into the other half of the
doubler in the study & out of the doubler in the lounge into the
receiver
MCA for the subwoofer.
Does this make sense ? If so, can you do it ? And how much, how long, etc,
etc.
Thanks for your patience over a long winded email,
Cheers,
Steve

Subject: [KAT5] RGB over KAT5
Hi guys,
I'm an existing user of KAT5 to send S-VIDEO down from my study into
my lounge (which works great). I've just bought a plasma screen
(yippee) & now want to send RGB down in the same way.
I'm thinking of buying a RGB->VGA converter from
<a href="http://www.rgbtosvideo.com/">http://www.rgbtosvideo.com/</a>
& trying to get Keith to build me a pair
of KAT5 VGA units. This will allow me to connect to the plasma's VGA
input.
Has anyone else got a similar set up ? Any problems or advice ? My
alternative is to send down component video but I hear RGB is better.
Another related question is whether anyone knows of a good RGB SCART
IR controlled switcher (2 or more in & 1 out).
Yet another question (I'm on a bit of a roll here) is whether I can
send the line level subwoofer out from an AV receiver over KAT5 using
an MCA set of units (or even the spare stereo connections of my S-
VIDEO units). I can then connect up to an active subwoofer in the
lounge. I believe I can but it wouldn't be the first time I've
talked crap.
Any advice appreciated,
Cheers,
Steve
