You can route SPDIF over one of the Kat5 pairs. This is what Keith posted a
while back...

Hi All,

Although it hasnt appeared here yet.... there is a message due to appear
from Mark Harrison who has kindly been an alpha tester for Digital Audio
over KAT5.

He has successfully sent digital audio over unmodified KAT5 video circuits.

This means that people now have a means of distributing Dolby Digital to
distant rooms.

If you have standard KAT5 AVS units and are only using them for Composite
Video, it means that the second video circuit is unused and could be used
for Digital Audio. You would need to make a custom breakout lead to do this
but details are given below.

For the TRANSMITTER end.

SCART

Pin 2 Right Analogue Audio In

Pin 4 Analogue Audio Ground

Pin 6 Left Analogue Audio In

Pin 13 Digital Audio Ground

Pin 15 Digital Audio In

Pin 17 Composite Video Ground

Pin 20 Composite Video In

For the RECEIVER end.

SCART

Pin 1 Right Analogue Audio Out

Pin 4 Analogue Audio Ground

Pin 3 Left Analogue Audio Out

Pin 13 Digital Audio Ground

Pin 15 Digital Audio Out

Pin 17 Composite Video Ground

Pin 19 Composite Video Out

There are images in the KAT5 user guide on <a href="http://www.kat5.tv/userguide.html";>http://www.kat5.tv/userguide.html</a>
The connections to be used for Digital Audio are the ones labelled as
CHROMA

(C)

I personally havent tested this but Mark is very critical of Audio
Equipment
and if it works for him then it must be OK :-)

Obviously you try this at your own risk and it may not work with all
equipment but it is highly unlikely that anything would be damaged by
trying.

Keith

Paul.

I think you said that you are linking your LCD monitor to a PC. If so, then
why not put a TV card in the PC and just use a monitor cable up to the LCD.
You will need to use separate speakers too.

Good stuff thats what I like to hear - just waiting for Keith to sell me a
fix.

Was trying to scrimp and save by slapping a normal LCD monitor to the wall
and buying a unit to go svideo/scart -> VGA(like
<a href="http://www.rgbtosvideo.com/";>http://www.rgbtosvideo.com/</a>
unfortunately it wont work cheap compatibility ) .... This in principal is
stupid due to the frequency shifts of source and taregt - looks like I'll
just have to get a cheap LCD TV grrrr.

as
good as having hard-wired scart throughout the house. I use fairly high
spec
wire but only standard CAT5 sockets and patch panel. There is absolutely
no
interference or degradation. If you are looking at multiple sources then I
believe there is a switcher under development that might be of interest.
