John,
Welcome. I've been using KAT5 modules since 2001, and still find they
do what I need.
The only place I've run speaker cables is for in-ceiling speakers.
Where I'm using traditional floor-mounted speakers, I have a local
amp, and a KAT5 receiver to create multi-room zones.
The majority of my automation stuff is either over ethernet, or over
the mains (X-10), so the CAT5 (with a C) wiring is fine for that. In
addition, I use a small amount of telemetry stuff (PIRs, temp
sensors), which can all be wired to run over CAT5.
STP is necessary only if you have REALLY big emf interference. REALLY
big, in the sense of blast-furnance... I'm UTP throughout.
One of the key benefits of the KAT5 (with a K) modules is that they
make proper use of the twisted-pairy-ness of CAT5 (with a C) cabling,
unlike some rather more expensive solutions I could name :-o
Regards,
Mark
