Actually, it only depends on the size of the park.

The term "ball-park figure" comes from the US Baseball
Association rules,
which specified the size of a ball, but NOT the size of a playing field.
Hence baseball pitches were squeezed in at "about the right
size"... which
led to the term coming into use to mean what it does.

Most people these days outside of the US know what it means, but not why
:-)
