Re: MP3 Whole House Audio

Hi Ray,

I havent ripped my CD's to MP3 yet except for a few trial tracks.

What I have been working on are Access Databases searched from Active
Server Pages running on Microsoft Personal Web Server. I now have databases
for my Music and video collections which can be searched via a web browser.
The search screen can be as simple or as complicated as you desire.

I am including chart information in my database so that I can search for
records from a particular year, month, day, chart position, artist or
title. the results are displayed with hyperlinks to play the track.
It currently works with *.wav, *.mp3 and *.mid files. I havent yet got
round to issueing commands via a com port to control an external CD player
but it is on the "to do" list.

If we get round to having a Mini Conference I will be pleased to
demonstrate it. The beauty of the system is that you have your own intranet
in the house with all your databases and music on a central server with
massive disks, and people using any other PC can access the information and
choose what and when they listen to.

As my database programming skills progress I am adding more features to it
and will add a web programable playlist facility soon. By adding
dynamically generated playlists based on the current date and the stored
chart information it will be possible to leave it running by itself with a
constantly changing program. As it approaches summer it would start playing
summer hits etc. (or you could make it play music from the winter during
the summer !!! )

What level of effort is involved in converting a CD collection to MP3? I
ask because I was looking last night at a link from the UKHA site to
someone who as connected CD autochangers to a PC to provide
audio-on-demand. I can see problems both ways: autochangers costing
money, MP3 costing time.

I ask as someone with an extremely nice hifi-autochanger that is showing
signs of being on the way out. It makes a great excuse to begin looking
at firstly: a more friendly way of choosing music than guessing what's
loaded in the autochanger; secondly, a move towards whole house audio or
at least a degree of automation.

Ray.
