Name of proposed newsgroup: uk.comp.home.automation
Newsgroups Line: For those interested in Home Automation in the UK (and
Europe?)
Newsgroup to be Unmoderated.
Rationale:
The newsgroup comp.home.automation has existed for some time, and
currently attracts several thousand messages each week.
However, the majority of these messages concern implementation of X-10
products in a 110v environment. (X-10 was a British standard for home
automation that subsequently caught on in America - since it uses
modulation of the power lines to carry inter-device control signals,
products are specific to a particular mains voltage/carrier frequency).
This makes the comp.home.automation group of less interest to the UK
audience.
In addition, there has been a recent growth in interest in the UK media
in "home automation" (for example the recent BBC "Dream
House" series,
and growth in the membership of the UK chapter of CEDIA (the Custom
Electronics Design & Installation Association.) This to me suggests
that
the UK market place is beginning to move from "early adopter" to
"early
mainstream".
While these issues may also be said to extend to mainland Europe, the
lack of a current widely-supported "euro." organisation means
that uk.
is an appropriate hierarchy. The name uk.comp.home.automation has been
chosen to model the existing comp.home.automation.
Charter:
uk.comp.home.automation is an unmoderated newsgroup for users and
potential users of "Home Automation". Abusive and angry posts
should not
be posted to the newsgroup, but commercial adverts are welcome provided
they genuinely advertise products and services suitable for deployment
in a UK environment.
