I printed out the IS1U60 datasheet from RS yesterday.  I can understand
some
bits of it, but not enough (IMHO).

Keep up the good work Nigel, I reckon your circuit will feature in my
dabblings somewhere.  The other option could be a TBA2800 from Maplin which
is an IR preamp, for which there is a circuit, but I haven't had time yet
to
(try) compare it to yours for any similarities.
