I don't think this is relevent to the X-10 problems you mentioned, but here
is a copy of emails I got form Hal in the US. Very helpful, even though
they don't officially support the eruopean versio (especially since I still
only have the trial version).

While we are working on a new version of HAL for US and therefore I assume
the UK.  I do not have information about specific new features, or modems
that will be support.
I'm not sure why your schedules/reminders are not working.  They do work in
the US version.
However, you need to work with Cocoonz on this issue.  My company, Jackson
and Tull, is licensed by HAL to work with the US customers only.
I do think I recall hearing that their was a problem in the UK about a
difference in the Date or Time style, Cocoonz should know if their is a
fix?  Or you can try to make your date or time format look mine and perhaps
that will work?

Thanks again for the reply, I disabled the outlook settings and all is
working fine now. One other problem however is that schedules and reminders
don't seem to work. When I ad them they seem to be included in the list of
Reminders or Schedules, but Hal does not action them. For example to turn
on a light at a specific time. I can ask Hal to turn the light on directly
and this works, so its not my homevision or X-10 control of the light. Also
the reminders screen seems to try to work the correct dates etc. The only
other thing is that after the expected time of the reminder/action, I can
look and see that Hal has not processed the action/reminder (the green X is
not highlighted). Any ideas would again be appreciated.
One final question, Cocoonz tell me that there is a new vers of Hal being
released before Christmas which will have support for UK modems and more.
Can you tell me what extra features are in this new version ?

Unfortunately I do not support the European version of the software you
have.  You will have to direct all your technical questions to Cocoonz.
With that said, your error in the US is usually related to the Outlook
functionality?  While HAL is closed, open the Configuration screen and goto
the Properties of the Personal Assistant icon.  Here if you uncheck use
Outlook Contacts and Calendar you will then probably be able to start your
HAL without an error.
Here is some help on getting HAL set up to work with Outlook.
The error OLEAUT32.DLL is usually caused when trying to set HAL up to
interface with Outlook.
Do you currently have Outlook 97 or 98?  These are the only two Outlooks we
interface with.  We do not interface with Outlook Express or Outlook 2000.
If you do have an appropriate version of Outlook lets make sure it is set
up properly.  To open the Configuration screen without the regular HAL
server running.
Goto the Window's Start button to Programs to HAL2000 and then to HAL
Config.  It will pop up a message saying HAL Server is not running.  Click
OK and the Configuration screen will open.  Goto the properties of Personal
Assistant.
Here you will want to make sure that you have a check next to the Outlook
features you want to use.  This can be Contacts and/or Calendar.  Once you
have checked these, click on the Options button.
An Option screen will appear.  Now click on the Select Folder button next
to the Outlook options you wish to work with.  Select the Outlook folder
you want HAL to access in order to find the correct information (most
likely for Contacts it will be the contact folder and for Calendar it will
be Calendar).
If you are setting it up to work with Contacts you will also need to select
what specific Outlook Categories you want HAL to link to.  In order for HAL
to link to the Outlook Contacts you have to have some of your contacts in
Outlook associated with Categories.  Categories are a way of associating a
persons relationship with you.  For example if you mother is a contact, you
may have her categorized with Family, or someone at work categorized as a
Business contact.  When you create or edit a contact in Outlook at the
bottom of the set up screen is where you can associate these categories.
Once these categories are set in Outlook you must specific what categories
you want HAL to be able to see.  If you only want HAL to link to Contacts
that are associated with the Friend and the Family categories, then only
select those two categories on the HAL Option screen.  If you want HAL to
work with all of your Contacts then select all of the categories which have
used.
Once you have finished setting up Outlook and the HAL Config screen start
HAL up.  You should not get the error anymore.
If you continue to get this error on start up, or a different one, then you
are experiencing a bug with the HAL program.  In some cases we can not seem
to link to some customers Outlook information.  We believe we will have
this fixed in the next version.  To get it so you can now start HAL without
getting that error, restart the HAL Config screen and goto Personal
Assistant properties.  Unselect all links to Outlook.  This error should
now go away.

I got it working, it was a problem with the date/time format. HAL support
in the US gave me the fix. If anyone else has a similar problem let me know
and I'll forward the mail they sent me.

Not really i'm afraid. Have you got the UK version and assuming you have
there is only the usual date time format places in Windows to check. I have
not had any problems like that - mine have all been to do with X10 signals
not getting out of the computer unless one is sent manually first. It then
works for a time but eventually gives up again. I have checked the IR-X
board, the plug adapter into the wall and had the same problem on more than
one pc so I am at a bit of a loss at the moment.

Plenty of other stuff to keep me occupied but I will get back to it sooner
or later. Get the rest of the house in order first.

I would also like to try the whole house mics but as you say - all the kit
is a little expensive.

I am having trouble with my schedules and reminders in that they seem to
register, but don't process. I'm not using outlook as my reminder etc ? I
have heard it might be something to do with the dat/time format, do you
have any ideas ?

As I mentioned in my earlier post there is not a modem in the UK which
works
with HAL. There is a modem test program installed with HAL and I suggest
you
run this to try and get some idea of compatibility of your current one. I
have a US Robotice all singing and dancing external one which is crap with
HAL. Essentially it does not work at all and I gave up after struggling for
a while. Lots of other good HV stuff to play with to keep me out of trouble
(or in it).

Call Quantun Systems on 01792 464636 for an up to date view. They are the
official UK distributors. I have found them to be very helpful but hindered
a bit by lack of support from the US.

Another question regarding HAL2000. I downloaded the trial version and have
been playing about with it. I even went out and bought a brand new internal
voice/fax modem to get the voicemail options working. I'm having problems
with this though, firstly when I call into my PC, HAL answers and then
seems to try to set up a data/fax call rather than play my recorded message
and take the call. Also when I use HAL to dial out a number, it fails
completely. It seems to take the phone off hook alright, but seems to have
problems dialling digits (no pulse or tones can be heard). My modem works
fine, as I use it on internet, and other software that came with it for
answermachine capabilities works fine.

Any ideas, or has anyone come across this  ?
