I discovered last night that I think I've blown the TSOP 1838, I've
replaced it and now it works, sort of.
The problem is it doesn't actually control anything! A bit of diagnosis
with a multimeter and a camcorder reveals that pin3 on the 555, only drops
to about 0.8V when off, this is sufficient to light the IR led to a light
glow, but not the visible one. Also when high it's only showing about 2V,
but maybe this is right. I guess these measured voltages are some sort of
mean (RMS?), given that there's an oscillation going on.
What's a likely cause of the residual on pin3 when off?
Is 2V sufficient on pin3 when on?
Is that why it won't control anything?
I'm hoping this will be the last post on the subject!
