No one here has EVER said that MP3 was the same quality as a true digital
or
analogue source, but the fact remains that for many Home Automators and
many
other people, MP3 fills a gap that has existed for a long time. Mainly a
virtually unlimited selection of music available almost instantaneously.
Certainly that is the reason I am using MP3.

Peoples choice in music also affects the choice of medium as well. Most of
my favourite tracks range from 1957 - 1979 and the equipment I have indoors
(which in no way could be called audiophile) has a better specification
than
much of the recording studio equipment in use at the time of the original
recordings.

As for your comments regarding Virgin. You are in the fortunate position of
living in a location where there are almost no free spaces on the FM band.
For those of use in more rural areas, the quality (or your percieved lack
of
quality) of Satellite distributed radio stations far exceeds the pops,
farts, crackles, and other interference superimposed on the 5kHz bandwidth
AM stations that we have to compare with. (Virgin, BBC5Live etc.)

As to compression.....if you want to hear distortion and pumping introduced
by an overworked compressor, just tune into Radio 1 where most of the DJ's
seem incapable of

a. setting the mic at any level other than maximum gain
b. using a mic without shouting

The resultant signal has a dynamic range of virtually zero and picks up
every rustle of paper etc.

I will agree that my hearing isnt as good as it used to be due to spending
over 20 years working in Nightclubs. The high end of my hearing range has
dropped a bit but it still reaches high enough to hear the quantisation
noise on some FM news broadcasts. and any buzzes, crackles and clipping in
any sound system annoy the hell out of me. That said, MP3 is just perfect
for my needs and one day when I have finished ripping my CD's to MP3 I will
start on the vinyl that I cant get on a digital format.
