I shouldn't necessarily worry too much about perceived north/south
divides (speaking as a Yorkshireman, living down south).  The deployment of
exchanges is of course, entirely focussed around BT's perceived ability to
generate revenue, but it is going to be deployed fairly evenly across areas
of similar population rates.  Rural areas, whether they're in Scotland,
Yorkshire Moors, or Cornwall would likely be towards the end of the
deployment of exchanges.  However, from my recollection of the deployment
plans, they're also some strange anomolies, for some technical and for some
commercial reasons, so the more people enquire to either ISPs, BT direct or
even the VideoStream type companies, the greater the pressure will be
applied to BT's deployment plans.

Probably the greatest concern to availabilty to the mass market is
simply the availability of ports on the muxes in the exchanges, as well as
the backbone in order to carry all the traffic.  Clearly, BT will not be
deploying muxes in exchanges with the same number of ports as telephony
users, that would be madness.  They'll only be deploying a small amount of
ports per exchange initially, get the service off the ground, and then
dependant upon the take-up rate will either increase (presumably) or
worst-case slow-down the rate of deployment of further muxes to the
existing
exchanges.

I, for one, hope that the service does take-off rapidly, forcing
BT to deploy more exchanges/more muxes/more ports.  This will only help
fuel
the provision of services/enable teleworking/VLANs etc as well as forcing
the price down and increasing the availability.  Remember that BT is fully
aware of the impending LLU, it may not be seen to be doing to much as yet,
but if the take-up rate is high, BT could be back to a fairly dominant
position, but also they'll be perceived opportunities for Other Licensed
Operators/companies to provide alternative copper-based services thus
re-inforcing the competitive market place.

Oh well, can but hope.
