Oh yes, they are horrible. Next to impossible to plug in by feel alone, so
you have to dangle over the back of the TV, nasty low quality plastic
housings, huge connector so it won't fit through small holes to pass a
cable into an enclosure...
_However_, they are _very_ available, commonly fitted on TVs and VCRs,
adaptor leads to other connectors are readily available, they allow
function switching, and if they're carefully assembled reliability is
actually surprisingly good- the only real pain is where you have to
reconnect them regularly. And they're cheap :-)
Personally, I'm glad he's using them, the only real alternative I could
think of would be an RJ11/RJ45 socket, with adaptors made up from that to
SCART, but that would be hassle, mainly because of wire types (SCART
usually has some mini-coax cables etc in the bundle, they just wouldn't
mate well to an RJ** crimp.). The other alternative is a new connector (or
an existing broadcast standard like a Tajimi 10 pin), but that means more
adaptors and converters... doesn't appeal personally- go SCART!
