I've just come across this DIY HA Tips website/page. I'm sure some people
on the list know about it already, but the first tip it presents impressed
me so much, I thought I'd pass on the link. (Does this email sound like an
ad for a pyramid marketing scam to anyone else? :-)

And the first tip is for an automated curtain opener. It's so simple...
"Mount an old electric auto antennae on the floor next to the pull
cord.
Attach the antennae to the cord and connect the motor to a power supply and
your favorite automation relay. Presto! Automated draw curtains!"
You could probably also mount it horizontally for "normal"
curtains too.
and with a little thought and a couple of pulleys you could make one aerial
open/close both sides of the curtains.
There's other good stuff on there too, building X10 into lamps, watching
your kids in their playroom, quite a bit of stuff on garden sprinklers too.
