Maybe its a feature of the modem softwa¸Õ…‹
then.

This is how I have got mine setup, I'm using
HomeVision and a Solwise Caller ID unit. The text definitely appears
on the screen just before I hear the first ring.

I definately have seen
CID BEFORE the first ring.
In my old house I had HV displaying CID
overlayed on to the TV picture. Sometimes you would see who was calling
before you heard the phone ring.
