We write software for GSM modems like the www.wavecom.fr unit.
I use one to control my house and alerts for the alarm and CLI etc.
They cost around 250 pound but are full self contained and have a real rs232 port unlike using a 5110 & datasuite. I also looked at using one as a door phone as they have both mic and speaper connections and full voice dial control via rs232
