IME, it's much easier to overheat adjacent components with a small iron- I
normally use a 50W Weller, so the job is done before anything
overheats. My experience with my 15W Antex is that it's easy to damage
either a PCB track or an adjacent component when soldering a big
connection- you have to hold it on so long that the whole area gets
hot. So, if you are unfortunate enough to find that something has been
toasted, it might be worth trying a beefier iron, at least for the big
connections.
(We used to have a low voltage 100W iron at work, for _really_ big
connections, IIRC it used a 3V supply, and rather thick cable, and had a
maximum on-time of 30 seconds- it came up to full heat in about 2
seconds...).
