What you're looking for is almost exactly what I'd like to see in a
thermostat too. My approach would be slightly different, letting the
central house control system decide whether it's a weekday, or if I'm on
holiday or whatever, and then letting the thermostat know which mode
it's supposed to be in. The thermostat's job is to control the temp,
and if you keep it as simple as possible and only doing that, there's
less to go wrong with it (especially if you build it yourself :-)
One thing I'd like to include would be a time/temperature profile which
sets the required temperature settings for overnight, morning wake-up,
unoccupied daytime etc. Steve's approach using occupancy goes some way
towards this, but you don't want the same temp when you're sleeping as
when you're running about trying to get ready for work.
I'd also thought about making it "learn" temperature response to
heating
rather than trying to work out the curves and switching times, and after
starting from rough guesses I'd expect it to be pretty accurate after a
few weeks of operation.
I've got a few more ideas in this and related direction, and as soon as
I get my new place (if the lawyers can sort out a few minor problems)
I'll be starting to put them into practice.
