Historically, external modems/TAs were limited by early serial chipsets.
Hence the peak in sales of PCI serial cards using ...550 chipsets when
V.fast was launched.

For USB, the problem doesn't arise, since you need to aggregate a lot of B
channels to flood a USB bus!

With USB, the obvious issue is that the TA manufacturer needs to provide
drivers for the right O/S - it's not quite as straightforward as assuming
that all modems could be treated as Hayes on COM1. If the O/S is going to
be
Win2k or WinME, then there shouldn't be an issue. If it's older versions,
then there might be - WinNT4...forget it ; Win98SE...maybe OK ;
Win98...likely to have problems ; Win95...just say no (things like
vendor-specific patches to Win95's USB drivers required in my experience.)
For Linux, then check your distribution, but I'm guessing from the context
that Graham's friend probably is running a Microsoft O/S.

Other thing to remember - like for like, external TAs are twice the price.

I have an internal ISDN card, but an external V.90 modem. In retrospect, I
wish I'd gone for an external ISDN card, since swapping a PCI device
between
machines is always just too much trouble to ever get done.

I believe that you only get serial port imposed speed limitations when
using
channel bonding...

...most of the bandwidth bottlenecks come from further own the chain. I
sometimes have real problems connecting to BT and I'll often find that
everything just stalls for a while every now and again.
