Tim’s really your man here, but…

If the AD conversion is carried out in an amp it is usually by a cheaper generic chipset, same applies to onboard DAC’s in DVD and CD players. In the main an off board DAC will produce a superior sound, but this is not always the case, it’s very much a case of try it, listen and learn. The difference is in the actual process of going from a digital bitstream to an analogue waveform that the amp can send to the speakers; this is where qualities becomes an issue, AFAIK and care.

Leads, IMO, at times are overrated, but in many cases not again it’s all down to personal preference and whether your ears can pick it up or not, I know a few people that cannot tell the difference, yet I can hear a massive difference in quality, spatial effects and steering between leads.

Hi-Fi goes in stages, a £100 player sounds like s**t, a £300 player sounds good, a £300 player with an off board DAC sounds great, but IMO t get any better sound you’re gonna spend a grand or more. Not always true, but this is my experience and whether it’s worth spending the extra is entirely up t you, the person that listens to it!

My take if it’s good enough for you, then who cares so long as you’re happy with it!

A bit off topic but I know we have some audio buffs out there.

What difference does it make to the sound quality between using an expensive or cheap CD transport or interconnect lead assuming the AtoD conversion is being carried out in the amp, surly the data is digital, its ether there or not so how can it be changed by the hardware?
