Thanks
Alan.
Youve
confirmed what I have always said.
For
Analogue Audio, good screening is a must and low capacitance if you dont
want to
loose the higher frequencies. Or you can convert to a balanced signal and
send
it for long distances over two bits of wet string.....well not quite but
any old
twisted pair comms cable, even telephone cable. When we ran Coastal Radio
at the
local college there was a run of 100m of normal telephone cable from the
studio
to the refectory for an amp that we placed in there.
Even
BiWiring is of limited but noticeable benefit. You are effectively just
putting
a much thicker cable to feed the speaker but as long as they are still
being fed
from the same amp you can still get cross modulation from heavy bass
transients
that will cause audible effects on the higher frequencies.
To
gain the maximum benefit you need to Bi-Amp at least using an electronic
crossover and separate amps for Low and High frequencies. Concert PA
systems can
be split into as many as 5 separate bands. Sub Bass, Bass, LowMid, HighMid
and
Treble.
This
allows you to use beefy amps for the bass and more sublte amplification for
the
more delecate parts of the audio spectrum. It also means that you havent
got an
amp rated a several hundred watts that could burn out tweeters that may
only be
rated at 25W. In discos that dont use a Multiamp configuratiuon there was a
rash
of destroyed horns when "Rave" appeared on the scene as the makeup of the
music
was totally different. There were segments where the only audio was very
high
frequency treble and if the DJ turned the mixer up high, apart from being
painful on the ears, the 500W amp would kill the 50W horn in a matter of
seconds. :-((
When I
get time I will send Tim a set of KAT5 modules to try on his Plasma screen.
I
would be interested to find out what he thinks of the quality. Mark
Harrison was
suitable impressed with the Audio performance and I know what others think
of
the video performance. I would also be interested to find out how much Tims
Component Video lead set cost. Probably more than my TV
!!!
Keith
Well we done a review tonight of digital
interconnects, I was unable to get a Siltech lead as suggested by Tim so we
made do with the following kit.
QED QUNEX SR75 £60.00
QED QUNEX P75 £25.00 (my lead)
TDK cheapo audio interconnect
FREE
The results, they all sounded the same, even
the
cheapo lead. We honestly could not pick out any noticeable
difference.
Whilst I would not disagree that good quality
interconnects for analogue signals are a must, I cannot say the
same
for digital.
The biggest improvement I found with my setup
was
bi wiring the speakers and using the 10P, it made a vast
difference.
