I
have
the domestic version of ADSL from BT. I share the connection with three
other
PCs using Microsoft ICS and I seem to be achieving 400K on average.
BT
installed a dedicated socket and you should think through where it
would be
most convenient for you to have it installed. BT insisted on not
using the
existing wiring to one of my existing telephone sockets (apparently
the
wire used was not up to their standard) and they wired the ADSL socket back
to
the the BT junction box. I am planning to rewire through a different route
that
is more aesthetically pleasing. As an aside, I have exactly the same set-up
in
France through France Telecom - the same Alcatel modem was sent to me in
the
post with a number of adapters that you plug into all your telephone
sockets.
This had the advantage of using the existing telephone wiring and the
possibility of using the modem in any of your telephone sockets. You
also
avoid having to wait for an engineer to visit you.
I
don't know about cable but I cannot do without ADSL.
Roger
Cable is generally cheaper, but the bandwidth will be shared
among
all houses on your spur. If you are the only person in your street it will
be
blisteringly fast, but if you live in a street of nerds (like us)
donwloading
large files all day long then it could start getting *really* slow.
Connection
tends to be via ethernet so it is easy to incoporate it in sany existing
network. The only way to really find out how it will perform for you
is
to find someone in your street who has it, and try downloading a large file
at
peak time to see what bandwidth they can achieve.
ADSL
has a contention ratio so the bandwidth you pay for can be shared by either
50,20 or 6 users depending on which flavour you go for. Having said that,
I've
had ADSL since December and I've never had less than 400k available, so
either
I'm the only person connected at my exchange, or I don't understand how the
contention ratio works, perhaps Keith can ask a colleague at Martlesham why
this is? The domestic version id designed to connect via USB, but with any
version of Windows after Win 98 SE *or* Linux the modem can be shared
through
software.
Tim.
Can someone tell me the pros and cons of cablemodem and
ADSL.
I
*think* I can get either in my area.
If
so I am not sure which one I should go for!?
I
guess they should be routed to node0?
Also, does anyone know whether it is better to leave a computer on
24/7 or is it better to shut down frequently...., regularly....,
occasionally?
Thanks
Vijay

Re: [OT] New Satellite Service
True.
Why don't BT offer a 24/7 connection on ISDN
for those of us that can't get cable or ADSL for a REASONABLE
price!

I'm just not very confident in the ability to deliver
in the wake of EuropeOnline and now Starspeeder.
Even though
ISDN is much slower at least it's a known entity to me, so I may
take that option for 12 months, and then look at what else is
available.
