There is some debate over the best way to connect a DVD to an amp - Optical or Coax. I have mine connected using both.... Why??? Well I will explain.

The DVD player also plays CDs right, so SWMBO puts in a CD uses the 'listen to music' button on the pronto, and the amp switches to DVD etc. Easy. No. The pronto has no way of knowing if the surround sound is on or off on the amp, so it leaves it alone. Result=SWMBO listens to all CD in pro-logic. Yuk.

Solution. Easy. Connect the DVD player optical to DVD on the amp, leave the surround set to on on that input. Connect the DVD player coax to CD  on the amp and leave the surround set to off on that input. Minor changes to the pronto macros and everybody is happy.

Getting back to the original point. I can genuinely hear absolutely no difference using the same DVD player and same amp with either optical or coax connections. Use whatever is convenient to you.

The Sky issue is different. Only a Sky+ can (currently) send DD to an amp. I have a Sony digibox, that is connected using the optical output (the only digiboxes that have these, other than Sky+). It happily sends a 48k PCM signal to the amp, but there is no software option to send DD at the moment. NG discussion has it that the Sony _could_ support DD, but Sky need to allow a software update (which could kill a revenue stream from Sky+ sales!).

Would one of you home cinema buffs be able to tell me what sort of cable I need to connect my DVD player to a home cinema amp.

Both units are JVC and have both the optical and 'phono' type coaxial connections on the back.  The amp/controller can be configured to accept either or, as far as I know my sky box doesn't support this (I know sky are trialing some DD at the moment, but my box only has stereo out 'phono' style sockets that I presume wont have the correct encoded bits), it's the pace unit.  So what would be my best option to use for the DVD player - optical or coax, and where night one get the correct cable/s -would I be correct in assuming that an ordinary unshielded wired one will be 'bad'.

Thanks,

Steve

BTW anybody over this side of the pond wanting a Psion Wavefinder - PCworld in Sprucfield have about a dozen left - Thanks, Michael.
