Thanks for the pointer; just what I need.  One on order now! 
 
Really helpful sales person - I mentioned that I was ideally wanting to test the bare wire (ie, before adding RJ45 leads) and he was keen to find a solution - I got the idea they would add something like an IDC socket to help in this situation.  How does everybody else test their bare wire?

For all those into wiring their homes with miles of CAT5 cable, this is the perfect device you have been looking for.
 
I saw this in Elektor Electronics this month. This looks like a great tool for testing CAT5 cables.
