testing bare wire? - the only time I ever need to do that is to either:

a) identify a particular cable from amongst a bundle, or
b) to check for broken cores within the cable.

In either case I just do a simple continuity test with my DMM...

scenario a) I need to do quite often, scenario b) I've never needed to do
yet, as I would have to suspect a broken core before doing this...
