I have t agree with Mark on this. Petrol fumes and electricity in any form dont mix.

 

I have worked at various Petroleum and Gas Installations and ONLY DIESEL vehicles were allowed on site. Radiopagers and Mobile Phones were left at security and power t ols were prohibited. When some concrete had t be dug up with a pneumatic drill there had t be a constant supply of water sprayed on the the ground t prevent sparks.

 

Phone located outside buildings HAD t be Explosion Proof and the line to it was fed via an Isolation switch so that all power was removed before the phone was opened up t work on it so that there was n possibility of a spark.

 

On the Norfolk Broads the cruisers have an earth lead attached before refuelling t discharge any static build up before and during refuelling after several boats blew up.

 

I DO think the notices telling you t SWITCH OFF mobile phones is STUPID. It should say DO NOT USE.

Turning the phone OFF causes it to transmit a signal t say it is going offline and the act of switching it off could cause an explosion.

I find your reply offensive and ill-considered.

 

I worked for 8 years in the construction industry, 3 of those years for BP. At my level in the company, I received weekly reports of injuries and deaths in our global business. I have had a personal friend killed by being crushed by a crane (not when I was working for BP.)

 

When YOU have had t explain t someone's widow that their husband has been killed through inadequate following of procedures, because some fuckwit foreman decided that Health and Safety rules were just "crap t keep someone in a job" and ignored them, THEN you will be qualified t stand up and talk about Health and Safety regulations.

Yeh, and it is all typical c***p t keep someone in a job..

When you start your car, there is a bloody great spark generator in the starter motor. None I know off are sealed and all use brushes.

And what about all the other switch contacts you might use before moving off.

The problem that the Petroleum Regulations is dealing with is t do with handset batteries. If, as always seems t be the case with my phone, the battery is slightly loose, then there is the potential for a spark. Sparks + petrol fumes = explosions.

Now, t be fair, this has never happened on a European forecourt, but that was the thinking.
