Phil has hit the nail on the head with 100% correct answers.

The "additional strange multiway out the back" is for connectio
to a
a base station dock.  The docking station that comes with the unit is
refered to a "Mobile Dock" and IMO is essential, otherwise the
floppy
dive is external (connected to parallel port) and has no CD ROM.  It
also has some pretty good sounding stereo speakers. Without the
docking station, the unit is REALLY light in weight (I thought the
box was empty when I first picked it up.

I am doing a battery calibration now, and will report back.
