I love DMX. I don't love the pricing ;-)

I do know someone who lights his house with DMX-controlled stuff, but he is
a theatre lighting designer. I asked him how much one of his lights
actuall=

cost him after he said that he got it "cheap", and he replied
"I got it for

NJD are probably the leading retailer for DMX in the UK.

In conversations with Keith, DMX512 has reared its head more than once.
This is another commercial control system, which is used extensively in
commercial-type premises - so I would guess that its reliability is
somewha=
t
better than X10.

It simply sends multiplexed control data on a bus to all devices (such as
triac/dimmer packs), and each device inspects its own address in the
bitsream to receive its control data.  I'm not sure about device status
(local control is possible from the device itself), but I'm sure Keith can
provide more details.  Alternatively a quick www search on dmx512 should
yield some information.
