RE: Help!!
Mark,
I run X-10 in my own house, too, for exactly the reasons you list, and
woul=
d
add the time factor. My X-10 implementation at home was installed in
phases=
.
Each phase took an evening's work, and left the house in a
"usable" state,
with some benefits at each step.
For example, the early step of replacing the bedroom light with an LW10,
coupled with a IR-receiver-with-buttons next to my bed meant that I could
turn off the light from in bed rather than arguing with Mary about who had
to get out of bed again!
By comparison, some of the more "upmarket" systems I've seen have
left
houses literally unliveable in for weeks. On house I know had 192 discrete
cabling runs put in, back to a central control room... The first fix
electrics involved took a _long_ time. Those of you who've seen my cabling
skills will be pleased to know that I only did second fix work ;-)
I _am_ a CEDIA fan, but I find the kind of systems put in to, say,
Audio-Visual Interiors to be a bit off-putting. Not because of the A/V or
the funcionality, but because of the way that everything seems to be
subsidiary to a rather "themed" style of interior that strikes me
as too
American. I also tend to get Architectural Digest at least three times a
year, and World of Interiors most months, and the British look is,
unsurprisingly, the one I'm most comfortable with.

The cost is a major problem to those of us on a budget.
There's also the question of standards and compatability. The reason we're
all using HomeVision, Comfort, HomeSeer, IR543AH etc etc is they all
"talk"
X10 which while far from perfect is very good.
Doxey - oh great one - start designing an X10 compalible system. :-)
BTW - the review samples of the KAT5-AVS units are stunning! Review coming
soon.

I love DMX. I don't love the pricing ;-)
I do know someone who lights his house with DMX-controlled stuff, but he is
a theatre lighting designer. I asked him how much one of his lights
actuall=

cost him after he said that he got it "cheap", and he replied
"I got it for
about =A31800."
NJD are probably the leading retailer for DMX in the UK.

In conversations with Keith, DMX512 has reared its head more than once.
This is another commercial control system, which is used extensively in
commercial-type premises - so I would guess that its reliability is
somewha=
t
better than X10.
It simply sends multiplexed control data on a bus to all devices (such as
triac/dimmer packs), and each device inspects its own address in the
bitsream to receive its control data. I'm not sure about device status
(local control is possible from the device itself), but I'm sure Keith can
provide more details. Alternatively a quick www search on dmx512 should
yield some information.
