Title: Re: [ukha_d] DOH! - why didn't I think of that before?
I had a similar issue. There are a number of software applications available to run on a PC (in background or as a service) that work with the dynamic DNS services to get around this. Most won't provide what you want as they watch for the ip of the local PC changing and yours won't. A couple (of the smarter ones) do work however - Try Dynsite (http://noeld.com/dldynsite.htm). I actually use a Mac application that works fine. However.....
What they do is send a request to a remote host which sends back your actual ip.. I can provide a remote web page which will give you this information if you need it but.... Three points here....
   1) If your isp implements a transparent caching proxy then they see the cache address not yours and hence don't work. Freeserve is problematic here. If you don't have this cache problem then this 'out of the box' software will work for you. Try Dynsite, if it works you don't have this problem. You need to enable the 'smart ip' detect bit from memory.
   2) This solution is really only an automated version of the polling routine you talk about, also it's an internet cf intranet access so your proposal is far better as it keeps your traffic local, and fast. However the pre-written package is already integrated with the Dyndns service, so you don't need to write that part.
   3) If you are using dial on demand this needs to be filtered out by your router, otherwise it will keep bring up the connection.

I ended up using a telnet connection to my router and polling once a minute, when it changed I updated my dyndns address, (its a Mac application). However I now use static ip so the problem went away.

Incidently ACE has an update ip command built in for just this sort of issue.

Are you using ISDN2 or ADSL on your router, I guess ISDN2 as you talk about dialling up. In this case your ip will only change after a new connection, this might simplify your polling if you can detect a dialout to trigger an ip grab.

I got my whizzo new ISDN/ADSL router from SEG late on Friday evening (it
came when I was out, so the neighbour took it in)

In no time at all, I've got it set up and working, and it is providing my
internet connectivity right now...

and only now have I just realised one thing...

How the hell am I supposed to use a DDNS service now? - previously the ISDN
connection was managed by MS Proxy server/external TA combination, so the
internet facing IP address was assigned to an interface on the NT server, so
it was a piece of cake to run a DDNS client there to register it each
time...

Now of course, the dynamic IP address is assigned to the router...

Has anyone got any ideas for getting round this? - I need to detect whenever
the router goes online, and then detect it's external IP, in order to be
able to register it with DynDNS.org

The router does have a built-in webserver and telnet server for
management/config, and one of the pages does show the connection status and
external IP, so the only idea I have had so far is to use a script to scrape
the IP address from the webpage and or telnet service, and push it into the
DDNS client as a manual update... but that seems rather inelegant, and
whilst I don't believe I'd have any difficulty with the script to acquire
the Address, I'm not so sure about automating the DDNS client to register
it. Also, I have the problem that unless the router can somehow trigger the
script to run when required, I'll have to have the script polling constantly
just looking for an address change...

All ideas greatfully accepted...
