Well, we've just had 2 power cuts this evening - one lasting about 15mins,
the other about 5mins.

Between them, I dug out an old UPS and stuck it between my PC and the
socket - nothing.

Armed with a multimeter, I disassembled said UPS and discovered that there
are 2 sealed lead acid batteries in there (it's a UPC Smart-UPS 600)
identical to the ones I sourced for Mark - ie. 7Ah 12v - same as used in
alarm panels etc.  Unfortunately, one gives a reading of 0.3v and the other
a more reasonable 4.5v - so I guess these need replacing (or careful
recharging).  Of course other UPSs may have different batteries, but I
remember some people/person asking if they were the same as alarm standby
batteries....
