Believe that this was a product called the 'Active Badge', based on
smartcards with inductive-loop interface (interrogated by radio).
Developed in Cambs but never commercially exploited.

A couple of years ago, when I was at Uni, the Lecturers used to wear an
electronic badge which would allow anyone in the Uni to locate them when
they were on campus. Every main social area (lecture theatre, canteen,
Lecturers offices etc) was equipped with a receiver, which would keep
tabs on where they were. Alas I don’t know what the stuff was called but
the technology is already out there... just a thought.
I'll do some web searching tonight and see what I can find.
