kat5 alternative for Americans?

Well, KAT5 isn't available for the States so I found some
alternatives, which generally look like this:

Now, one of the things that I notice about these units is that they
don't have a power supply.  Why is this and what does it mean for the
quality of transmission?  Does it imply that it's not using balanced
lines?
