I use Mac's all the time when I can - and I love them - however as a general recommendation I always tend to say a Windows PC as you just have more options available for them. If I have to use an application like Word or Excel though I would always use the Mac version preferably and the ease of use is just so much better. But Windows is getting there.
For graphics applications the Mac wins hands down in my opinion. I  run virtual PC (a Windows emulator) on the Mac for total compatibility with any application I need - it runs at about the speed of a 500 Mhz Pentium machine.
Re Java - I have to say that I am not overly impressed at the Java VM on the Mac OS - and I think I would recommend  the Windows route - Apple have committed to a new version shortly that will make the Mac the platform of choice for Java but as of today it's all hype.

Anybody had any experience of MacOS X?
I'm in the market for a notebook (whoopee!) and the Titanium PowerBooks look
really nice, but I don't want to blow over two grand and find it runs java
like a pig (that's my main development environment)
