This sort of pricing is pretty much what I've heard to get my house
retro-wired. I was outraged at the 3000 or so they wished to charge.
After
talking it out, it turned out that the company quoted £40 per line run -
not
£40 per wall port! So, say 4xcat5 to each room, all laid and terminated at
the same time = £160!!! thus 28 locations around the house = £4480. This
company specialised in putting HA cabling and systems in.
Anyway, after haggling, and removing some even more outrageous things out
of
the quote, I've heard nothing back from them at all. Interestingly as
well,
they would *not* provide a breakdown of the large costs or labour costs -
even when I suggested that putting up a lighting cove around my living room
(basically a MDF box around the edge) would probably take 3 hours max and
cost probably £50 for material - they refused to break down their £1700
figure.
Anyway, got a local sparkie to quote me now - they suggested that cabling
up
lots of locations including putting masses of wire in the living room
should
take "a few days". It's nice to know up front, since paying 2
labourers for
a few days sort of limits the amount of money they can charge!
