Also in my experience network cards from the pound box at my local,
smalltime computer shop always work. starnge, you pay all that money for a
good looking card then have to use a bit of old tat.
I suppose you could goto 3coms website and try to find the linux driver, i
think they have them there.

I used a couple of 10 quid cards & also other cards i have had given
with no
probs. Your best bet is to ask on the forums at www.e-smith.org

Just installed e-smyth but it doesn't seem to have support for the NIC I'm
using (3Com 3c509b).

I'm using the latest version ISO - am I limited to the short list of
drivers
shown?
