Pedro,

I was being flippant. As the older hands may remember, I was at a major
oil company for several years, and do understand this stuff ;-)

I was a bit concerned by your "blanket pronouncement", probably
because
my natural tendancy is to over-explain ;-)

Ok - admitably "some" cars need to keep running on leaded but the
vast
majority (95%) of engines running leaded could use unleaded and have no
problems apart from "pinging". The pinging is caused by the
valves not
having enough lead deposit to cushion the valve and so "pinging"
occurs.
If
the vehicle has been running on leaded for a substantial amount of time
then
the change to unleaded would not affect the engine in the slightest due
to
the lead deposits already existing. The primary reason for leaded fuel
is
not to leave lead deposits but this is an effect of running leaded and
as
such helps us to run unleaded by its own deposits - if that makes sense.

Erm, no. I didn't know that, nor did my mechanic, nor did the factory,
nor
the owners club ;-)

Was there a missing "not" in that sentence, perhaps?

Do you know that if your car is more than 10 years old, it can safely
run on
unleaded without any problems?

People often look funny at me for not driving through the forecourt to
the
free pump at the front. The reason is because I need Super, and at
smaller
filling stations you're lucky to find 1 Super pump never mind more.
