The
point is that there had to be plenty of planning by the terrorists and it
is in
not detecting the planning that the intelligence agencies have failed. It
is
true that it is difficult to prevent individuals from carrying knives onto
planes, but it is also true that these terrorists managed to get onto all
four
planes undetected and that is not mere chance, they came up with a more
reliable
way to bypass security in my opinion. And I repeat (at least I think I do
but
never saw my previous message appear) when I was at the post office I saw
the
security they put around their cash centres, it is simply not possible to
get
into to those without explosives or someone choosing to let you in. The
only
time that one of those centres has been knocked over in recent years is as
a
partly inside job. Such flight deck security on planes could work and could
be
implemented, the question is whether the airlines would have the
stomach
for it (both in terms of financial cost and customer relations). I still
believe
that it is sensible to remove the possibility of hijackers getting control
of
the flight deck. As far as I can see, a jet laden with fuel is the most
potent
weapon that terrorists could sensibly get hold of and after yesterday I
don't
want to see them ever get hold of one again. If that means that I never see
another pilot or flight deck then so be it.
