A
great many sets did have more than 4 buttons, typically 6 or 8 to allow for
Video Games and VCR's, but the frequency allocation was only ever based on
there
being a maximum of 4 terrestrial channels. The spectrum was mapped out in
the
mid sixties and it took until 1981 before the 4th channel
arrived.
Also
dont forget that TV set manufacturers sell to many countries. Why is is
that
some modern TV's have 99 presets when the UHF band covers 21-68 which is
only 47
channels..... because they are designed for the global
market.
In the
US, towns often have a dozen or more channels, but the towns are often so
far
apart that the signal wouldnt reach the next town.

Seem to recall 6 or 8 buttons and i am sure i
have seen more. I wanst going as far back as dual standard.
Even my decca portable has 8. this was one of
the
first color portable approx 17 years old. All tranny and remote control.
