I tried this and there is nothing listed as being on port 25 or 100. I did
notice a local address of Gandalf:smtp using TCP as the protocol. The lowest
port number was 593 and others in the 4 digit range.
Since this is a mail program problem and I read about smtp in the
instructions this could be a problem. How do I find out more info about
this?

I tried telnetting from another machine using 'telnet 10.0.1.230:1028'
(without quotes)  where 1028 (and several other addresses) was the port
number but nothing replied at all.

I am back online tomorrow afternoon

Thanks

(Out of his depth) Ian
