Re: cables. was HA system networks

Firstly welcome to the world of bulk buys and the got to haves, here on
ukha_d.  Just remember when you are on your 4th bulk buy, you have been
worried that it can start getting expensive.

On the cable most group members would advice you to put as much cat5e in as
possible then add a little bit more.  It all depends on the location
really.  Sockets by the TV can use lots, at least 4 by the time you have
KAT5 units (see www.kat5.tv), ir distribution, perhaps a networked
recording system etc.  Then its likely that you will want points on either
side of the room.  As a guide here are the number of cat5e cables I plan to
install when I get round to rewiring.

Lounge              12
Dinner Room         8
Kitchen             4
Hall           8
Landing        2
Bathroom       2
Bedroom 1      8
Bedroom 2      8
Bedroom 3 (Study)   16
Garage              8
Shed           2

Coax and Speaker cable are just being put in where appropriate.  The main
thing is to try and ensure that where possible you leave wiring routes and
access to conduit accessible in case you need to add more later.  The
principal is basically put in loads of wire when you get the chance (wire
is cheap), leave the wires in a back box and terminate them to sockets as
you need them.

That's my input, I'm sure other will give theirs if they disagree.

I see!

Our house is still being built (not self-build) and I would like to get
the cable done whilst it is still under construction. From reading the
FAQ's I've found that the bare minimum for any HA is (obviously depends
on individual requirements):

3 * cat5e
2 * coax
1 or 2 * speaker wire

any further advances?

BTW the controller I am planning to use is one that will be designed by
myself and a colleague based on LONWorks...does anybody else here use
LONWorks??

Pankaj.
