If you just want a Linux firewall you can just download a copy of
Smoothwall which is a self contained distro. Installs in about 10 mins
and works great. The only problem is it won't give you much exposure to
Linux as it is all hidden away!!

If you can get red hat all the better but be prepared for some head
scratching once installed to understand how it all fits together.
