Yup, most likely you are correct about the method of wiring.
Although not exactly textbook, yes you can put the modules basically at
the point of usage as you suggest. However I would recommend putting
them in enclosures if you can.

I and others have gone over this time and again the outcome being that
we have yet to come across a transformer that cannot be dimmed. I have
a
couple of Ring ones that I use here and they're fine on LD10/11's. In
short I'd try it and see, there is noticeable noise from the electronic
transformers, but other than that they're fine. I'm sure that there are
transformers out there that do interfere with X10 and that do not work
properly on a dimmer module, but I've yet to run across one.
I also use mains halogens on an LD11, again no problems.
So try it and see, if you need any more help just ask and someone will
help.
