Meteor uses the NPC  SM8220P chip, data sheet here :

This is a discontinued chip from the manufacturer, however the AudioLine 55 i believe uses the SM8221P chip, which is the 8pin verision of the
above, I've not yet however had chance to interface to the AudioLine unit <= BR> as this requires opto-isolationdue to grounding issues with the phoneline.<= BR>
As for the meteor cost, BABT approval dosn't come cheap, which is what I suupect makes the cost relatively high.
