The manufacturer from Dave's ultrasound related link also has a large
number of LCD displays as well as a 2x20 VFD display - all with
serial interfaces - from as little as 20 quid.

Where VFD serial-enabled displays can be had for USD 99.

My instinct is that these prices are pretty reasonable. Given the
straightforward brief of display only, perhaps we should be thinking
in terms of using an off-the-shelf display, building an add-on multi-
drop serial interface and perhaps commissioning some UK double-gang
display bezels?
