Just a thought....

The operational range on my netgear switch (as a fairly typical example of a
cheep network hub) is -20 to +40 Celsius...

I suspect that your problem is more to do with dropping below the dew point,
and getting condensation forming.. in which case, it's the humidity in the
attic that's the problem. (although, keeping it warm will stop that from
happening of course :) )
