I'll see what I end up doing with ADSL routers / modems before I go down this route - never used Linux before, just exploring the possibilities.   I have an old 120Mhz machine in a cupboard but think it's a bit flaky.  Thanks.

Most ADSL modems present a USB port.  Make sure that (a) your version of Linux supports USB and (b) that you can get Linux drivers for the modem.  Of course, with Ethernet presentation, you will need two NICS to go down the firewall route.
