Well, it used IPX broadcast, and most people in those days still used
IPX Bridges even if they were using IP routers ;-)

It will indeed. When I first played Doom, the _servers_ in the office
were 486/100s!

The reason for picking Doom was that it _will_ run on that kind of kit!
