Smartmedia adapters require drivers.

A CF card is an IDE device. If you can get an adapter, you *can* boot from
it.  You just need to connect the wires in the right way.  CF cards are up
to 640MB now (as pointed out by helpful people), and the Microdrive is 1GB.
You could put an entire OS on it.  I doubt you could plug it into the
PCMCIA
slot and boot directly from it though.
