RE: IR emitter lead length

Sorry Keith, badly worded on my part. Will 10-15 metres of bell wire be a problem, or will there be too much voltage drop?

I don’t think Ian Vine will be pulling the cable himself, but he is dealing with me direct in his capacity as director of Integrated Media Installations – usually he only deals with contract builders – but I’m a bit of a special case J

Hi Tim,

Is there something special about the current demands of your IR emitter that warrants a cable capable of carrying 20 Amps !!!

Use a bit of our old favourite....CAT5. That will easily handle the few milliamps required and being twisted pair will be more immune to interference that your pricey cable.

Nice to see that the MD of QED still keep his hand in though :-)

As an aside, if your dimmer panels are in there and you have quite a lot of lights spending a lot of time dimmed, ensure you have some ventilation as it could get very warm.

A ducted bathroom fan controlled by a thermostat could help. Better to consider at this stage rather than finding out later even if you only put the duct in for now.

I’ve bought an RC-5200 plus the Philips RF-IR unit (they do work together, and the Philips unit is 25 quid cheaper).

I’m slightly concerned as the cupboard I want to house the sky+ box is also going to be home to at least 2 dimmer panels, which could potentially interfere. The blaster, though not quite as powerful as a stock Pronto will certainly fire IR across a room, so I was thinking of mounting the unit on the ceiling opposite the main equipment stack so that I can operate the remote without pointing ala Crestron. If I want to attach one of the supplied emitter leads (double headed) Xantech styleto the same box and extend its lead, what sort of cable length can I use? It will be laid in the ceiling before decoration so I can use something with a low resistance per unit length – probably something like QED 79 strand as the MD of QED is doing my “automation” type wiring.

Tim
