Yes, they just measure the current flowing through a length of cable,
regardless of whether it's the incoming feed to your house or a spur
running
your HA stuff.  They measure up to 5A direct - anything more and you
need an
external current transformer (available in numerous ratios: 15:5 will
give
the product 5A out for 15A in, 100:5 will give 5A out for 100A in,
etc.)

They're also available with RS232 / RS485 / 4/20mA outputs so you can
remotely interrogate them...

List price of the basic unit is 372 + VAT (RS232 / RS485 / 4/20mA
outputs
cost more)
External Current Transformers are circa 20 + VAT

If you're just after a Voltage / Current reading (and are not interested
in
other parameters such as true Watts, Phase Angle, VAr, Power Factor,
etc.)
then you would be cheaper off with the LEM range of voltage and current
transducers from RS (Page 2-897)

I wouldn't normally have something as expensive as this monitoring my
power
consumption but, given that I designed 1/2 of it, it's only fair I
should
have one on "long-term test" <g>

Can these things be used in a local zone? I'd be really curious to
actually KNOW what sort of load my home 'office' kit is using for
example, separately from domestic stuff around the house. I guess I
could monitor with the office 'off' and later 'on' again though.

How much does one of these little things cost anyway? I don't see any
prices. "If you have to ask?" ?? ;-)
